First Days as an Artlet: A Literature Major

First Days as an Artlet: A Literature Major

It was a very exciting day for me: the first day of classes. I got to meet a new set of professors, which I never saw before in my previous college. I am adapting to an environment excellent for its pre-law courses, liberal arts courses, writing courses, and such. I am socializing with my new set of energetic, happy and bonded blockmates. The first two days I experienced in the building filled with arts and literature; it was an awesome experience.

The night before my first day is filled with different and mixed emotions: a part of my heart says I should be excited; a part of my heart says I should be nervous; and a part of my heart says I should be challenged. Those feelings are suppressing each other that led me to confusion. In the end, I fell asleep with those pestering emotions.

I woke up very early last Wednesday—it was 4:30 AM. That time, my body and soul are not merging yet. The feelings I had the night before this day was gone. I didn’t feel the excitement of the first day of my class. I took a bath; ate my food; wore the uniform I will be wearing for the next 3-4 years; and left for school. As usual, there is this widespread traffic jam occurring in the busy highways of Metro Manila. Positively thinking, this will only last 1-2 weeks, I hope.

I arrived at the LRT Station. It was filled with different people: students, workers, casual people and such. I was waiting for my friend, Nadia before going to the school. Due to the traffic jam, she arrived late. We finally met inside the train and exchanged some thoughts and story. Also, Darwin was also there. I didn’t talk to him that much because I never got him as my classmate back in my high school days.
We finally arrived at the school. It was 7:05 AM. There are a lot of students already. There were these innocent and excited students of AMV – College of Accountancy who are walking upstairs my previous college that I left due to a simple reason: this college wasn’t for me.

While walking, we stopped and rested for a while. We sat on the bench with a tree in front of the Accountancy building. After resting and preparing, we left of the AB Building. I am finding my cellphone from my pocket—it is not there. I looked back and saw my cellphone waiting for me in the bench. I immediately went to get it. This is the second time I left my cellphone. Leaving it at the AB Dean’s Office was the first. When I mean first, it was really the first time in my entire life, leaving my very precious cellphone given to me by my mother.

Arriving at my new college, I felt excited and nervous. Me and Nadia went upstairs and proceeded to the Dean’s Office to accompany Lesther and Louise for a while. After some time, a friend of Nadia came, followed by Joey.

It’s time for my Asian Civilization class. We (with Joey only) went downstairs first to use the washroom. Without any critical insult and comparison, I find the washrooms of AMV tidier and more comfortable. For the very reason that, the smell is really intoxicating my soul (this is very hyperbolic, I know.) because of the unflushed toilet bowls emitting foul urine smells. And the creature I hate seeing the most in a washroom is there: a cockroach, but it’s dead anyway.

Me and Joey went upstairs once again and went in front of the Room 204 classroom. Both of us were very shy to enter, but we did anyway. Sherien, articulating in a loud voice, said “Hi Neil!” I didn’t feel any embarrassment but instead, felt a warm welcome. After Sherien said that, Emy told those warm words as well to me. We had some introductions only on the area where we are to be seated. We had some fun talks while waiting for the professor. After the professor arrived, Meryl arrived next.

It’s already our Computer class. Sadly, there was no professor around. I was just texting with my friends, telling them about my first hours in my first day of classes.

The next hours and days were the same. I can say that the everyday life I’m experiencing in this faculty is of pure excitement and passion. I’m hoping for positive outcomes when it comes to academics since I didn’t perform well in AMV because of the very reason that I do not like the program itself that affected my whole academic performance.

Pedicab Frenzy

Pedicab Frenzy
Opinions & Observations About Pedicabs in Broadway Pines Village

Throughout the years, the development of the land transportation system of the Philippines experienced a strong progression. We can remember the usage of animals (specifically horses and carabaos); the attachment of a miniature -sized seats to those animals; and the addition of small roofs to those seats as a shelter to the blazing heat of the sun or from the flood-causing rainfalls. Because of the power of technology, there has been an acceptance to the invention of bicycles, cars, motorcycles and trains. As stated before, there has been an attachment of small-sized seats with mini roofs into the transportation animals. It’s basically the same with bicycles and tricycles. In this way, people who own at least one of these two can earn additional income.

There have been monetary issues concerning tricycles and pedicabs. It’s the great amount of transportation fee they are requiring you to pay. But sometimes, you are paying the said service due to some complicated reasons. In this blog post, I’m tackling about pedicabs on our very own village.

Increasing Amount of Pedicabs and its Drivers

When I was a kid, there were very few pedicabs and their respective drivers existing in our village. If I can remember, it has been around 10 or something. Now, it’s greatly more than 30.

I cannot blame these drivers for choosing and taking the path of pedicab driving. In fact, they are doing a moral and respectable work. However, there can still be alternative ways to earn money. And the world doesn’t just revolve around pedicab driving.

Pedicab Drivers Offer A Not So Excellent Service

I can observe these pedicab drivers rushing so fast when they have their passengers on board. Sometimes, they drop me a meter away from the gate of our house. Also, their hands are very ready to get their payments for the service they did. Obviously, the very reason for this is to get first in the waiting line of the pedicabs. By waiting line, I mean the sidewalk part of the village, near the village gate where they are lined up properly. And also, they are very happy when the passenger they have on board lives in a house near the village gate, preferably some meters away only from the said gate. In contrast with the previous statement, they don’t seem to be happy when they live very far away from the gate (preferably my friend).

Cost and Passenger Issues

The minimum rate of service of pedicab drivers is 5 pesos while the maximum rate is dependent on the number of passengers on board. The service fee from your house to the village gate is (x number of persons * 5) pesos. Of course, you are not paying for the other person you are with when going out of the village, unless you want to pay for him/her. The service fee from the village gate to your house (regardless of the distance it covers) is divided into two payment schemes. When the passenger is 1=X (X is the number of passenger[s]), you are to pay 10 pesos. However, when the passenger is 1<X, the service fee is the same as the “house to village gate” fee, which is (x number of persons * 5) pesos.

The fee stated above is reasonable for a cause. But, the issue about the passengers is the one causing the cost issues.

Inability to Wait for Another Passenger

The most efficient way to save money is to wait for another passenger when using the service of a pedicab. When you are riding a pedicab from your house to the village gate, the pedicab drivers are striving a way to get more passengers to board their pedicabs. But when you are riding a pedicab from the village gate to your house, they WILL NOT wait for another passenger. The reason is obvious: to make more money easily.

To break down the last statement of the previous paragraph, they can make more money efficiently by some reasons. First, they will only deliver the passengers to one location. They can immediately go back to the village gate or board a passenger on the way to the said gate. Second, they will not waste time in waiting for another passenger. Of course, waiting for another passenger is burning too much time instead of transporting your passenger to his/her desired location and go back immediately in the waiting line. Third, if there is only one passenger, the pedicab driver will not burn too much energy in driving because of the overall weight of the pedicab driver.

Some of the Pedicab Drivers Themselves Love to Insult

I’m not very sure if I’m the only one experiencing this but, I experience those “Aaaaaay” (Insert gay accent here.) whenever I walk from the village gate to my house. It’s really irritating and humiliating. They are not doing it directly, but of course, you know YOU are their target. To prevent this from happening, you are forced to ride the pedicab and spend 10 pesos instead of burning some calories and saving money.

Overall Suggestions

I am hoping they would be counteracting these negative statements I am presenting to them. To summarize suggestions for an efficient pedicab transportation service, I am presenting them into a bullet form. However, these final concluding overall suggestions apply only to those pedicab drivers who practice such things as I mentioned before.
 Decrease the amount of pedicab and their respective drivers to prevent competitions leading to inefficiency of service, and greed to finish their service quickly.
 Increase the efficiency of service by means of improving their service quality (specifically not hurrying whenever they are transporting their passengers.)
 Promote the virtue of patience by means of waiting for another passenger when a passenger is riding the pedicab from the village gate to their own respective houses.
 Stop insulting / humiliating passengers, may it be directly or indirectly.

Sorry for some typographical or grammatical errors. I suck at grammar D:<

The Castle Girl

See that girl from the castle?

The girl with the blonde hair

Fashioned with rings

But not with diamonds

See that girl from the castle?

The girl who is wearing a crown

A crown made up of cloth

And a gown from the classic

See that girl from the castle?

The girl who is holding a staff

With unknown strands at the end

And swaying it continuously

See that girl from the castle?

The girl holding a crown

Cleaning it to perfection

And to myriad flawlessness

See that girl from the castle?

The girl trying out fancy gowns

Beautifying in front of the mirror

But not wearing those gowns

See that girl from the castle?

The girl who is frowning with tears

Scolded by the highness and royalties

And saying, “I understand.”

Will I still see that girl from the castle?

The girl waving sadly

Holding those big brown bags

And heading to the village

Where’s the girl from the castle?

The girl who I once thought

A princess of countless diamonds

And a maiden of beauty

The girl from the castle

Is a girl of priceless love

Who worked hard till the end

The end of her royal service

Now the girl from the castle’s gone

There’s nobody to see

But the castle shining

With unending emptiness

Naj’s Debut

I can describe this wonderful celebration as “Awesomeness.” It was a great swimming party (But I didn’t swim). The flow of the program is super great too! I am entering this in to my mind that this is one of those most unforgettable memories I experiences. Thanks Nadia! :) ) Loveyouuuu! :)
